GeoNet registered it 70km west of Te Anau at 12.40am, at a depth of 78km, and described the quake as moderate.

The Felt Reports on the GeoNet website showed that it was felt in parts of the North Island including Auckland, Waikato and Hawke's Bay.

Ashburton resident Annette Middlemass said the quake came as "a sudden jolt".

There was also a 4.1 magnitude quake 15km north-west Masterton at 6.11am, which was at a depth of 23km, which was followed by a 3.1 shake in the same area five minutes later.

Both were mostly felt in the lower North Island.
