Dog owners asked to be on tick alert

5:48 pm on 22 January 2015

The Ministry for Primary Industries is asking Canterbury pet owners to help search for dog ticks after a small number were found on two pet dogs near Christchurch.

Spokesperson Andre van Halderen said the ministry is unsure how the dogs were affected as they were born in New Zealand, have never left the country, and apparently have never come into contact with imported animals.

The two dogs have been treated for the brown dog ticks and are confined to their homes.

Dr van Halderen said while the risk to human health is very low, the pest is not wanted in New Zealand.
