Some customers in the Queenstown area remain without power after wild weather overnight.
MetService said more than 55 mms of rain fell in the region in heavy downpours.
Contact Energy said some of its customers lost power but most should now have had supplies restored.
However, Aurora Energy said high winds brought down powerlines, and many of its customers in the Frankton, Arrowtown and Lake Hayes areas, had been without power since about 2am today.
It said workers are out repairing the damage, and hope to progressively restore power during the afternoon.
Lake Hayes resident Elle McCammon said a huge area of the district would have been hit
She said there were about 450 homes where she lives, while a nearby subdivision has another 200-300 homes.
She said Arrowtown and Frankton were also without power.
The Met Service said there was still a risk of thunderstorms in the region this afternoon.
A severe weather warning is also in place for Taranaki, Nelson, southern areas of the West Coast, and Fiordland.
