The job of repairing up to 5000 quake-damaged Housing New Zealand homes in Christchurch is well on track to be completed this year.

More than 95 percent of Housing New Zealand's houses throughout the city suffered some type of damage in the 2010-2011 earthquakes.

Approximately 20,000 people live in the houses.

By the end of last month, repairs on 3200 were completed, with an average of 200 houses being repaired each month.

Housing New spokesperson Paul Commons said it is encouraging that repairs are ahead of schedule at the start of what will be a very busy year in Christchurch.

He said the agency is also on track to finish building up to 700 new homes across Christchurch by the end of the year.
