Cars crushed by tree in Auckland Domain

7:18 pm on 19 February 2015

The owner of one of three cars crushed by a falling oak in the Auckland Domain says people often sat under the tree and it's lucky no one was hurt.

The oak split and a large branch dropped without warning about 1pm this afternoon on the park's west side.

The Auckland City Council said the tree was rotten inside, something it did not detect during an assessment late last year.

No one was in the vehicles when the tree came down.

The tree will be cut up with chainsaws before being removed.

Tofik Mamedov owns one of the crushed cars, and said his Rover was a write-off.

He said he did not have insurance, and wanted the council to pay him compensation.
