The police in Southland are searching for a German woman thought to be missing in the Manapouri Hope Arm Area.
The woman, known as Tina, is about 25 years old.
The police said she caught a water taxi at 11am yesterday to the western banks of the Waiau River.
It was believed she intended to walk to the Hope Arm Hut, but she did not meet her return water taxi at 6.30pm.
A search began at 8.30pm, and the police were also making enquiries at accommodation sites in the area.
The woman has long auburn hair, and is of medium build.
She was last seen wearing dark clothing and carrying a small daypack.
