A kayaker has drowned after going missing this evening on the Waiau River near Tuatapere, in Southland.
Police were alerted at 5.15pm that the 51-year-old was missing.
His empty kayak was found on the beach near the river mouth and his body was located shortly after about 400 metres down the beach.
He was wearing a life jacket.
