Four people, reported to be Chinese tourists, have escaped without serious injury after their rental car went off a gravel road into the Whataroa River on the West Coast.

Police said the 4WD crashed about 20 metres down a bank into the river shortly before midday.
The vehicle was completely submerged.
No other vehicles were involved.
