A sprinkler ban is now in place across the Wellington region.
It would affect Lower and Upper Hutt, Porirua and Wellington.
The Wellington Regional Council said it had imposed the ban at the request of Wellington Water, which manages the region's water supply.
The ban applied to all garden sprinklers and irrigation systems.
The Council said careful watering by hand was still okay.
Residents have been asked to conserve water, and the council warns more restrictions were possible if there was no decent rain.
