Trio caught speeding in West Coast

2:50 pm on 9 March 2015

Three people, including two tourists, will appear in the Greymouth District Court this week, after they were caught way over the speed limit on the same stretch of West Coast highway, south of Hokitika, over the weekend.

An unlicensed German tourist was caught driving at 171 kilometers per hour on Saturday evening and, on Sunday, an Indian tourist was caught at 163 kilometers an hour in the same area.

A 17-year-old with four passengers passed a patrol car at 133 kilometers an hour on Sunday.

After being pursued by police, the driver turned off the lights before eventually stopping.

West Coast Police Area Commander Inspector John Canning said any of these incidents could easily have ended in tragedy and it was simply a matter of luck that officers were able to intervene before that happened.
