Christchurch City Council voted this morning to grant about $350,000 towards the fit-out of the Christchurch City Mission housing shelter.

Karen Terris said the facility would be for families without stable housing, and that there would be capacity for three families at a time.

She said it would be for people walking in off the street, those who have not been able to get in to other organisations, or others who hear about it.

"People we find on the streets - we can take them through the process of getting in to the shelter."

Ms Terris said that, with winter fast approaching, it was important the project was completed soon.
