Police have named the forestry worker who was killed in a logging operation in Taranaki yesterday.

He was James Stuart Oxenham, 72, of Urenui.

Mr Oxenham is believed to have died after he was hit by a log rolling off a truck while working in Te Wera Forest near Stratford.

A rescue helicopter and St John paramedic attended the scene but Mr Oxenham could not be revived.

Police and WorkSafe New Zealand are investigating the accident.

WorkSafe said it was the first forestry death reported since January 2014. It said the death highlighted the need for people in forestry to make safety their top priority.
