The police are praising a man and a woman who jumped into the water to rescue an unconscious man in Wellington Harbour last night.

They said a man was heard calling for help about 50 metres from the shore at Eastbourne about 10.30pm.

The pair, who were passing by, swam out to the man and, finding him unconscious, pulled him to shore and began CPR.

Emergency services arrived soon after, and the man was rushed to hospital, where he is in a serious condition.

Senior Sergeant Andre Kowalczyk said the action of the two people was exceptional.

Police are still trying to find out the identity of the rescued man, who was described as an Indian in his twenties.
