In the first fatal road accident so far this Easter, a car crash near Twizel has claimed the life of one person and left another seriously injured.
Police said the two-vehicle crash happened about 2.15pm today between the Lake Pukaki Visitor Centre and Mount Cook Road.
The injured person was taken to Christchurch Hospital by helicopter in a serious condition.
The Police Serious Crash Unit will examine the scene, and the road is expected to be closed for some time.
Last year four people died on the roads over the Easter holiday weekend.
