The Transport Agency says a crash between a train and a milk tanker in Southland early this morning happened at an uncontrolled crossing on a farm driveway.
Both drivers were injured in the crash just off State Highway One between Gore and Mataura.
The Agency's rail safety regulation manager Dave Robson said the private crossing did not have bells, lights or barrier arms and only had minimal signage.
There was no record of any previous incidents at the site.
The Transport Accident Investigation Commission has been notified.
