Driver killed in bridge plunge named

Police have named the man who died after the vehicle he was driving smashed through a barrier and plunged over a bridge in central New Plymouth on Sunday morning.

He was Andrew Maurice John Warren, 40, of Urenui.

Mr Warren's car crashed through a bridge railing on Vivian St at about 2.40am, before falling about five metres and coming to rest in a car park below.

Emergency services were called but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Warren was travelling alone and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Taranaki Police assisted by the Serious Crash Unit were continuing to investigate the incident.

The death had now been referred to the Coroner.
