Train services are back to normal in Auckland after a man was killed by a freight train.

Commuters wait to board a south-bound train. A new timetable at the end of the year is expected to boost weekend services.

Part of the rail network was closed just after 6.30am today, after the 59-year-old man was hit by the train at the Papatoetoe Railway Station.

Police said they had been told the man had been seen walking along the tracks towards the station.

Hundreds of commuters were affected by the disruption, with many at Homai Station having to wait for more than an hour for bus replacements to arrive.
