A police spokesperson said the stand-off began about 10.30am when officers tried to talk to a man in a car who had failed to appear in court on another matter.

He allegedly man ran off and ended up under a Mahia Road house, prompting more than two hours of negotiations.

The man allegedly pulled out a gun and shots were fired by both the police and the suspect, the spokesperson said. The man was taken to hospital to be treated for injuries but police would not say what they were or how he suffered them.

A Middlemore Hospital spokesperson said they were treating a 42-year-old man with a gunshot wound, and he was in a stable condition.

A man had since been arrested and charged over the incident, and both a criminal investigation and an Independent Police Conduct Authority investigation were under way.
