Police in Gisborne have started a criminal and internal investigation after two prisoners being held in police cells set fire to their bedding last night.

The Fire Service was called to the Gisborne Police Station just before 8pm.
Three prisoners were taken to Gisborne Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.
The police said while the cell was only smoke-damaged, four other prisoners in different cells had to be moved to temporary accomodation.
