Plea for fast New Plymouth airport decision

2:42 pm on 3 May 2015

The Government is being urged to quickly approve a proposed $11 million redevelopment of New Plymouth airport.

Mayor Andrew Judd said his council signed off on the project two months ago and he could not understand why it was taking the Crown so long to give it the go-ahead.

The Crown is joint owner of the airport with the New Plymouth District Council.

Mr Judd said Taranaki was facing a downturn in the oil and gas and dairy sectors, and the airport project would help keep skilled people in the region.

The office of the Transport Minister Simon Bridges said he would make a decision shortly.

The current terminal is designed to cater to 60,000 passengers a year but last year more than 340,000 people went through it.
