A man is dead after being knocked off his kayak by waves at a Northland beach yesterday afternoon.
The 51-year-old, who was been named as Dein Mitchell from Glenfield, was kayaking 100 metres offshore at Muriwai when he was hit by a series of powerful waves.
A surfer in the water saw them separate him from his kayak, a type known as sit-on-top, which washed ashore without him.
His body was recovered at about 3.20pm.
Mr Mitchell was wearing a wetsuit but no lifejacket.
His death will be referred to the coroner.
