A person is dead after being hit by a train near Ashley, in North Canterbury, early this morning.
A police spokesperson said the person was on the railway line and was hit by a freight train about 3am. They died at the scene.
"The driver is being supported by his employer and has been given some time off and offered counselling," the spokesperson said.
The death had been referred to the coroner.
