Police and animal control officers have ended the bid for freedom of enterprising cow that escaped from the Taylor Preston meatworks in Ngauranga Gorge.
Traffic on State Highway 1 northbound out of the city was restricted to one lane and two southbound lanes were closed while the animal was shot and its carcass dragged to the side of the road shortly before 3pm.

The carcass was being removed after rush hour to minimise traffic disruption.
