A digital animation company is looking to recruit 100 people to work on a joint China-New Zealand film series.

Huhu Studios in Warkworth and China Film Animation are about to begin producing the first of 17 films this month.

The films, with budgets ranging from $20 to $60 million, will be produced over the next six to eight years, and marketed internationally.

Huhu Studios chief executive, Trevor Yaxley, said it would produce 45 percent of the first film, Beast of Burden.

He said there was a lot to be gained by the venture and hoped to see the local film industry develop, particularly the animation industry, which he said had struggled over the past 25 years.

The joint-venture plans to make nine animated films, and eight live action, with both English and Chinese versions.
