Canterbury police have found a body near the upper Tengawai River, where a hunter went missing last month.
Sixty-three year-old Murray Edge became separated from a friend he was hunting with on 19 April.
Inspector Dave Gaskin said the body was in a rugged scrub-filled area, so officers would complete a scene examination before the body was recovered.
Mr Gaskin said police were not speculating on whether the body is that of Mr Edge, and would not release details until a formal identification process had been completed, and next of kin notified.
The death was referred to the Coroner.
