MetService has issued a severe weather watch for Southland, with expected wind gusts of up to 120 kilometres an hour.
A strong westerly flow moving up the South Island will bring gales and south-westerlies to Dunedin and Clutha this morning.
Severe gales of more than 120 kilometres an hour are expected late in the afternoon, but should ease later tonight.
