Council backs Dunedin CBD revamp

An $18 million revitalisation of Dunedin's Central Business District is being pushed with the backing of the city council.

City councillor Aaron Hawkins said it was almost 30 years since the last revamp of the CBD in the early 1990s.

Almost $10 million of the cost of the decade-long project will be covered by the council.

He said the goal was to create a space that people were proud of and wanted to spend time in.

Mr Hawkins said the Chambers of Commerce, central city retailers, and commercial property owners, had been calling for the council to give the city centre a facelift.
