The TranzAlpine train service has been halted for the day after a collision with a car at a crossing in Canterbury.
Emergency services were alerted to the crash about 9.15am.
It happened at the railway crossing on Keens Rd near Springfield.
A KiwiRail spokesperson said the train was travelling from Christchurch to Greymouth with 56 passengers and three staff on board.
The driver of the car has been injured but there are no reports that any of the train passengers have been hurt.
The TranzAlpine will not run today due to the collision and bus replacements are being provided. The train driver will be given time off.
