The Christchurch marathon, taking place on Sunday morning, is back in the city for the first time since the earthquakes.

About 5,000 people have signed up for the 35th edition of the race, the most since it was forced to the outskirts of the city by the destruction wrought on the city by the quakes.

Race preparations have included filling in potholes on quake-damaged roads and negotiating a revised timetable for the demolition of the Christchurch police station.

At one stage this was scheduled to happen just a few hours before the starter's gun went off.
