Police said the five trampers were winched to safety by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter this morning.

Acting Sergeant Paul Spencer said they were well but extremely cold, and were now recovering in Methven.

The trampers were making their way to the hut, but were stopped by the snow late last night and set off their emergency beacon.

Police said the snow was too thick for a ground rescue overnight and a helicopter was deployed this morning.

Sergeant Paul Spencer said they were experienced trampers and have good equipment, including tents.
