The accident happened shortly after 7.30am, on the Christchurch-Akaroa Road at McQueens Bridge in Gebbies Valley.

Sergeant Paul Piper said the woman died at the scene, while the male driver and sole occupant of the school bus was trapped for an hour before the Fire Service freed him.

He suffered moderate injuries.

Mr Piper said, with forecasts of more heavy frosts in the coming days, all road users should take extra care when travelling in the district.

MetService meteorologist Stephen Glassey said weather conditions tonight would be similar to last night, with temperatures of -10°C forecast for inland Canterbury.

Mr Glassey said clear skies and light winds would cause temperatures to plummet overnight.
