6:22 pm on 8 July 2015

A man charged over the death of a six-month-old girl on Wellington's Kapiti Coast has been granted interim name suppression.

The 31-year-old made a brief appearance in the Porirua District Court this afternoon on one charge of assaulting a child. He was remanded in custody to reappear in court on Friday.

The baby girl, who had suffered a severe head injury, was taken from an address at Raumati Beach to Wellington Hospital on Monday afternoon. She died last night.

Sergeant Jason May told the court the assault charge was a holding charge and further charges might be laid on Friday.

Judge Jan Kelly suppressed the accused man's name and any identifying details, and also suppressed the infant's name.

A post-mortem is being held this afternoon and police said forensic investigations were continuing at the Raumati Beach property.
