About 1250 properties, mainly in South Dunedin, were flooded in early June when the city received almost three months worth of rain in one day.

The Insurance Council said provisional figures it had collected from insurance companies showed householders made close to 2,000 domestic claims, costing almost $20 million.

233 commercial claims were made for repairs and business interruption, totalling more than $8 million dollars.

There were also 170 claims for damaged vehicles.

The Dunedin City Council said its damage bill from the floods was $2.75 million.
