Two men on a boat have been rescued after a cold night in the Hauraki Gulf.

The fishermen were stranded in their boat overnight after it hit rocks on the corner of Kawau Island.

Maritime New Zealand said it received a mayday call at around 5am.

Response Co-ordinator Sergeant Graham Jex said the rescue involved police, Coastguard, and a rescue helicopter.

"They did manage to let the authorities know where they were, and once that was established, then it was reasonably easy to go to that location.

"The coastguard vessel was the vessel that actually located them on the rocks."

Mr Jex said one of the men suffered injuries from when the boat hit the rocks, and was taken to hospital.
