A 27-year-old Nelson man has denied a murder charge following the death of a man at a boarding house earlier this month.

Joseph Dempsey was initially charged with assault with intent to injure following the incident at Franklyn Village boarding house, in which the victim, Bruce Andrew Mortimer, later died of his injuries.

Mr Dempsey was then charged with murder, and entered a not guilty plea in the High Court today.

He was remanded in custody for a further hearing on 28 September.

Another man arrested in connection to the case, Timothy Brunsell, 17, has denied charges of assault with intent to injure.

Justice Simon France lifted the teenager's name suppression and remanded him in the custody of Child Youth and Family, until a hearing on the same date.
