Teenage tourist denied bail on P charge

Bail has been denied to a teenage tourist arrested after a haul of methamphetamine was found hidden in a courier parcel at Auckland Airport's cargo centre last month.

Shun Yuen appeared in the Wellington District Court today on charges of importing methamphetamine into New Zealand and conspiracy to supply the drug.

Police began investigating after Customs officers found the drugs hidden in four Chinese soup packets, which were in a courier parcel from Macau.

The methamphetamine is estimated to have a street value of about $1 million.

Mr Yuen entered not guilty pleas at today's hearing and elected trial by jury.

Judge Jan Kelly turned down his request for bail, remanding him in custody to reappear in court later in the year.
