He was 71-year-old Hamilton man Jacques Donker.

Police said he sustained a blunt trauma to his head and was found inside a cubicle in a public toilet in London Street just before 9pm on Monday.

They said a bottle used in the attack was recovered nearby.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Patterson said it was an opportunistic attack and Mr Donker happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

A 25-year-old man has been charged with his murder and stealing his car.

Mr Patterson said the police were appealing for information from the public about a man who was accompanied by two women in Victoria Street on Monday night.
