A father delivered his own baby this morning when his partner gave birth on the side of a busy Wellington road.
The couple were en-route to Wellington Hospital when they made an emergency stop on the side of Aotea Quay, near Westpac Stadium.
"The partner stopped on the side of the road and [she] pretty much gave birth then and there," a police spokesperson said.
A constable, who is a former army medic, arrived on the scene in the final stages of the delivery, and helped the woman in the moments after she had given birth, he said.
The woman's partner was the one who caught the baby when it arrived.
Wellington Free Ambulance transported the mother and baby to hospital and both were safe and well when they arrived, an ambulance spokeswoman said.
