A fisherman has died after he was swept into the water near Lake Ferry in the Wairarapa.
A police spokeswoman said emergency services were called to help the man, who was fishing on the shore and was washed into the sea just after 2pm.
She said another man swam out to help the fisherman and tied him to a rope before pulling him to shore.
Paramedics performed CPR but were unable to revive the fisherman.
