A construction worker is in a critical condition after falling up to five storeys at an Auckland building site.

The Fire Service said the man fell down a lift shaft where a Countdown supermarket was being built in Ponsonby.
St John said it was alerted by the Fire Service at about 10am today.
Fire crews helped get the worker out of the shaft.
The worker has now been taken to Auckland Hospital.
Auckland Hospital said the man was being assessed in its emergency department, and it could not yet give any information about his current condition.
WorkSafe said it had been notified and was making early enquiries into what happened.
