Wellington's mayor expects the so-called Leaning Tower of Wellington will be a dramatic and colourful landmark.

The tower is designed to sit at a 12.5 degree angle.

The new control tower for Wellington Airport was granted resource consent yesterday and will lean into the prevailing northerly wind at an angle of 12.5 degrees.

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown said submissions from pilots concerned about the visibility from the tower had been sorted.

She said it was a fun design.

"You certainly will see the lean, it will be quite dramatic I think and at night it will change colour depending on the strength of the wind, apparently."

The lean of the Tower of Wellington will be at a greater angle than Italy's famous Leaning Tower of Pisa.
