Auckland's Aotea Centre is set for a $64 million revamp as part of the council's push to make the area the heart of the central city.
Auckland Live director Robbie Macrae said the centre was 25 years old, and needed some maintenance.
Mr Macrae said the exterior will be refurbished, with the foyers re-done, and a new development at the back.
He said the development will be a high-performance home for the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, the New Zealand Opera, and Royal New Zealand Ballet.
Mr Macrae said there will be a strong focus on youth, arts, and entertainment.
He said a public consultation on the development is underway, and a business case will be ready by the end of the year.
