WCC eyes suburbs for housing intensification

9:03 pm on 9 September 2015

Some of Wellington's outer suburbs could become the next target of housing intensification, to deal with the city's growing population.

The Wellington City Council's Transport and Urban Development Committee has voted to investigate whether Khandallah, Island Bay and Newlands should have medium-density residential areas.

Spokesman Andy Foster said the suburbs had good accessibility to public transport networks and local amenities, and opportunities to enhance walkability and encourage cycling

As well, changing the zones would increase the number and range of quality housing.

"What it is more likely to be doing is to be changing the density, in other words the site coverage - you could put more dwellings in a particular space," he said.

"You may go up a floor but that's part of the conversation we need to have with those communities."

The process of rezoning the areas could take up to four years.
