Man almost crushed by faulty tractor

A Waikato hotel has been fined more than $40,000 after a poorly maintained tractor nearly crushed one of its employees.

The worker, who is from Argentina, was using a tractor at the Okoroire Hot Springs Hotel, near Cambridge, in March when its brakes failed and it began to roll towards a two-metre drop.

WorkSafe said the man jumped off the tractor, falling down the bank.

As the tractor rolled past, it missed crushing him by about 10 centimetres.

The tractor was in poor condition, with worn brakes, bald front tyres and loose bolts in the axle, WorkSafe said.

The company that runs the hotel, Kingstown Blue Spring Resort, has been fined $42,000 and ordered to pay reparation of $5000.
