Auckland Council is moving to more online communication with residents through its own news and information website.

The online version of the Our Auckland magazine, which is sent monthly to households, includes the council's view of current issues, as well as images and information.

Community and engagement director, Karl Ferguson, said eventually the printed version may be published less often, although the council will continue to produce a hard copy.

"We absolutely recognise that there will be people who always want to hear from the council through a hard copy - through something that comes through the mailbox.

"So, as long as that's their expectation and there's a need, we'll continue to have a printed version of Our Auckland."

He said the printed magazine, whose production costs about $1.1 million a year, will remain monthly for at least another year.

Mr Ferguson said the extra cost of the website was being funded from existing budgets.
