Custody battle over traffic island

8:42 am on 19 October 2015

A battle over a traffic island is partially blocking a road through a large development in west Auckland.

Auckland Transport says the sign's steel supports are in the path of traffic crossing the intersection, and that lane is closed until it's moved.

Auckland Transport said a large steel-framed sign on the narrow island by Westgate shopping centre was a safety hazard.

Auckland Transport has spent $5 million upgrading Fred Taylor Drive which runs between the old Westgate shopping centre and a new development across the road, both owned by Retail Property Group.

But the island is directly in the way of one lane on the cross road.

Retail Property Group has long had the right to occupy the island and has not agreed to an offer by Auckland Transport to move it and the sign.

Neither will comment, but after Radio New Zealand made inquiries, Auckland Transport said the company had asked for a meeting.

Retail Property Group is understood to hold a licence to occupy the island, and so far won't allow the sign to be moved.
