Earthquake Recovery Authority chief executive John Ombler says he can't discount the possibility of the Government pulling out of funding the new Christchurch convention centre.

The $284 million project has yet to get off the ground and its completion date has been pushed out to the end of 2018.

Under questioning by Labour MPs at a select-committee hearing today, Mr Ombler was asked if the Government was going to pull out.

He replied he could never say never to that possibility.

Mr Ombler said the government had been involved in commercial negotiations with the Australian-based Plenary Group since the end of last year.

He told the committee the talks were commercially sensitive but he hoped to have an announcement on the project's future early in the new year.
