Auckland's population continues to increase much faster than that of the rest of the country.

Statistics New Zealand figures show the city's population grew 2.9 percent in the 12 months to June, accounting for half of the country's total growth.

More than 40,000 people moved to Auckland in the year to June, and it is now home to more than a third of the country's population.

The Waitemata local board area, which includes most central city suburbs, had a population increase of 9.7 percent for the year.

Nationally, the population grew 1.9 percent.

The only region with fewer people is the West Coast, down 1.4 percent.
