Two people are dead and four injured after three separate crashes in the North Island.

A two-vehicle crash on State Highway 29 near Tauranga's Maungatapu Bridge about 7.30pm left an 18-year-old man dead and three others with moderate injuries.

A police spokesperson said it was believed one vehicle crossed the centre line, and police wanted to hear from any witnesses.

The second fatal crash involved a car going off a one-way bridge and becoming submerged in water near Whenuakite, on the Coromandel Peninsula.

The driver was found dead inside as the vehicle was towed out.

Police were still trying to establish the driver's identity.

Meanwhile, the driver of a car which crashed into a house in Kawerau this morning had been injured and taken to hospital.

A police spokesperson said the car was driven through a fence and hit the house just before 1am.

The occupants of the house were not injured but the woman behind the wheel had been taken to Whakatane Hospital with serious injuries.
