A man has been charged with assaulting emergency services staff who were responding to a crash he was involved in.

A police spokesperson said the driver failed to negotiate a bend and collided with a roadside barrier in the Kawarau Gorge between Queenstown and Cromwell about 10pm yesterday.

The 24-year-old woman had been drinking and was likely to face charges including dangerous driving causing injury, the spokesperson said.

One of the six occupants was flown to hospital with a possible back injury.

Another passenger, a 54-year-old man who was not injured, was arrested and charged with assaulting ambulance and fire service staff.
